There is no discussion on the fact that the walnut is, if not the symbol, one of the most established expressions of nuts. In Italian the word "walnut" indicates both the fruit of the Juglans regia and the botanical combination of hard and woody nuts to protect a seed.
Importance to the plant is given by the rich mythological, religious and historical literature involving it: walnut as "Jupiter's acorn", a tree excluded from Eden and under which witches gather for their rituals; walnut as a protagonist in nutrition, with its nutritional virtues and a similarity of the seed with the human brain, which even before the chemical evidence celebrated this fruit for its health-giving abilities.
In cases where the quantity and quality of information on a subject is extremely wide, it is easy that the unusual and unknown detail is hidden before our eyes.
The scientific name of the walnut is Juglans regia L.: "Juglans" is the genus, "regia" the species. In the binomial nomenclature introduced by the Swedish physician and botanist Carl von Linné, this was the exact way used to classify this specific plant. A name officially attributed to it in 1753 by Linné himself, who in the middle of the 18th century studied and convinced the botanical world of the usefulness of his taxonomic plan, necessary to resolve the great confusion caused by the import of fruit from all over the world into Europe. Von Linné formulated the still present binomial nomenclature and that "L." which follows Juglans regia is precisely the initial of his surname, applied to all the varieties he classified.
