Goji Berries for breakfast: Italians pick health

More Goji berries and less milk for breakfast: the new eating trends of Italian consumers are clear. A recent research conducted by Nielsen/Assolatte 2015 has identified some changes: among the preferred breakfast foods for Italians what is on the rise are vegetable drinks (+23% with a target of 4.8 million families) and jams (+ 1.9%) while coffee (-0.4%) and cow’s milk are declining (-7.4% even if the consumption of high digestible milk is increasing by 8.4%).

The first meal of the day therefore becomes increasingly fundamental and the search for wellbeing focuses on the nutritious properties of food, happily choosing so-called superfoods such as Goji berries.

What are Goji Berries?

Originating in the Himalayas and in the Amazon rainforest, Goji berries have been rediscovered in the West where they have had some success thanks to their extraordinary antioxidant and vitamin properties. They are considered nutraceuticals, i.e. foods with a high content of phytochemical compounds that allow them to help in the prevention of various health conditions. Actually the Goji tree - from the Latin name Lycium Barbarum - comes from internal Mongolia and is a perennial deciduous shrub of the solanaceae family (like eggplants, tomatoes, potatoes, chili peppers, and peppers).
