Curiosity
The date palm is a monocotyledon angiosperm belonging to the Family of Arecaceae (also known as Palmaceae) family, which includes about 200 genera, including the genus Phoenix, which comprehends 12 species, among which only 6 produce edible fruits. The Phoenix Dactylifera is not a tree, but a shrub, with a trunk of up to 30 metres in height, conspicuously covered with the remains of the sheaths of the fallen leaves.

History
The date palm (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) is a typical species of desert oases, and is native to North Africa, from where it spread widely to the hot arid regions of the world, especially Arabia and up to the Persian Gulf, where - given its extensive cultivation - it makes up the vegetation typical of oases. The date palm is considered to be the first tree to be grown by humanity and is a plant of ancient origin that already existed in the orchards grown by the Assyrians and Egyptians.
It is believed that its origin lies in the Persian Gulf and that date palms have been grown since remote antiquity (around 4000 BCE) in an area stretching from Mesopotamia to Egypt.
The date was considered by the Persians to be a symbol of fertility, while the palm tree was depicted by the Carthaginians on coins and monuments and used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans as an ornament during triumphal celebrations. The ancient Coptic texts relate that, during pregnancy, the Virgin Mary fed on dates.
The Romans used dates to flavour wine, make cakes and produce alcoholic beverages through fermentation. They attributed symbolic values of honour and victory to this plant because, even burdened by the consistent weight of its fruits, it did not bend, but rather tried desperately to rise upwards.
In the imperial era, it was customary to give a palm branch to the great actors, auriga or gladiators, and in the Christian tradition, the palm, besides being a symbol of martyrdom, evokes the triumphal entrance of Jesus to Jerusalem.
