History

In the 1st century B.C., Israel was already renowned for the excellence of its dates production. However, this crop was completely destroyed during the first century A.D.

The Country’s dates production recovered thanks to the introduction of high-quality varieties imported from Iraq, Egypt, and Northern Africa. The growing area goes from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Sea of Galilee. The most important growing areas are: Jordan Valley, Dead Sea Area, and Arava Plains.

As of today, the groves have about 200.000 date palms (female), half of which are young palms. Generally speaking, the flowering time for date palms in Israel is April, whereas the harvesting time is from August to October.

In Israel, dates harvesting takes place early in the morning, from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Harvested dates are then brought to packing plants and stored at +2°C. Fruit sorting is made in cold rooms, then dates are packed and frozen at -18°C by the end of the same day.

Storage

You can store pitted Medjool dates in dry, cool places, away from sources of heat and moisture. Here are 4 useful tips:

  • The ideal condition for keeping pitted Medjool dates is in a refrigerated environment. Nuturally pitted Medjool dates with no added sugar – containing only natural sugar - can also be stored easily at room temperature during the winter season due to low temperatures. During summer, however, it is advisable to store the product in the refrigerator or in the coolest possible environment as increased temperatures could encourage decay.
  • The ideal container for the storage of pitted Medjool dates is glass. Indeed, because of its composition it is impervious to chemical agents and gases, and, as it has excellent insulation properties, it holds the initial temperature for longer than other materials. It is even better if the glass is coloured: using coloured glass blocks the entry of certain wavelengths of light (including ultraviolet), and thus certain nutritional and organoleptic characteristics remain unaltered.
  • The type of closure of the container is also important as an airtight cap ensures that the food is protected from excessive contact with oxygen, that is fundamental for aerobic bacteria.
  • The best kind of storage environment is one which is well ventilated because ventilating the premises keeps internal humidity under control, which otherwise could escape from windows, thereby guaranteeing the right balance to lessen the onset of mould.
