Curiosity

Blueberries growing conditions may hinder its spread. Indeed, this plant needs a very special soil that contains no lime, is rich in organic matter and has a loose structure to avoid stagnation. In addition, a good water supply is also necessary to meet the crop's water requirements during the summer months.

The blueberry withstands winter frosts well and, if the wood is well mature, some varieties can withstand temperatures as low as -29 °C. It is therefore important to suspend fertilisation at the end of June, to encourage good lignification of the young tissue.

Overall, blueberries are fairly resistant to late frosts. The critical phase is during the flowering period, when temperature drops of 8-10 °C below zero can compromise fruit setting.

To perform at their best, blueberry plants need to be in direct sunlight and sheltered from wind.

History

Vaccinium corymbosum, commonly known as 'blueberry', is native to the eastern North American region, where it typically grows in damp forests and swampy areas.

Some the oldest traces of blueberries can be found in textiles from the Aztec era, whose textile indigo dye was obtained from the juice of the berries. Furthermore, Native Americans mixed milk and blueberries to obtain a grey dye that they used to dye cloth or paint their faces before battle.

The blueberry's origin is ancient and American. Although known in ancient Rome, when the physician and botanist Dioscorides described its properties in the time of Nero, the blueberry only became widespread during the 1600s thanks to settlers who reached the North Atlantic coasts of the American continent.

Storage

You can store organic dried Italian blueberries in cool, dry places away from heat and moisture. Here are 4 useful tips:

  • The best way to store organic dried Italian blueberries is in a refrigerated environment. Nuturally organic dried Italian blueberries can also be stored at room temperature during the winter season due to low temperatures. During summer, however, it is advisable to store the product in the refrigerator or in the coolest possible environment, as increased temperatures could encourage decay.
  • The ideal container for the storage of organic dried Italian blueberries is glass. Indeed, because of its composition it is impervious to chemical agents and gases, and, as it has excellent insulation properties, it holds the initial temperature for longer than other materials. It is even better if the glass is coloured: using coloured glass blocks the entry of certain wavelengths of light (including ultraviolet), and thus certain nutritional and organoleptic characteristics remain unaltered.
  • The type of closure of the container is also important as an airtight cap ensures that the food is protected from excessive contact with oxygen that can lead to lipid oxidation and encourage the growth of aerobic bacteria.
  • The best kind of storage environment is one which is well ventilated because ventilating the premises keeps internal humidity under control, which otherwise could escape from windows, thereby guaranteeing the right balance to lessen the onset of mould.
