History

It is a fact that walnuts are, if not the symbol, one of the most commonly known type of nut. The plant Juglans regia is given prominence by the rich mythological, religious and historical literature involving it. Walnuts were "Jupiter's nut," as well as the tree excluded from the garden of Eden and under which witches gathered for their rituals. Walnuts have a main role in nutrition, thanks to their nutritional properties. The kernel bears resemblance to the human brain, a fact for which walnut’s health benefits were celebrated even before scientific evidence.

Walnut’s scientific name is Juglans regia L.: "Juglans" is the genus, "regia" is the species. This is the scientific name that classifies this tree in the binomial nomenclature introduced by Swedish physician and botanist Carl von Linné. This name was officially given to the walnut tree in 1753 by Von Linné himself, who in the mid-18th century convinced botanists of the usefulness of his taxonomy. Taxonomy was necessary to create clarity after fruits from from all over the world had been imported to Europe. Von Linné invented the binomial nomenclature that is still in use and that "L." in the name Juglans regia is the initial of the physician's surname, juxtaposed to the names of all the varieties he classified.
