How much does an almond weigh?
Shelled almonds 1.1 g; one of the parameters to be taken into account at international level is the calibre of the fruit: the calibre of the fruit is defined as the number of fruit contained in 1 ounce (28.35 g) or 1 pound (454 g) of product. To give a practical example, when we talk about almonds category 16/18 means that in 1 ounce of almonds there are on average between 16 and 18 fruits.

There are several types of nuts and within the single categories the individual fruits have considerably different sizes and weights. What is perhaps less well known is that the size of the fruits can be very different even within the same type, among almonds for example, and even among fruits harvested from the same plant! As is the case of animals and humans, the growth and development of the fruit is also influenced by the external environment and "nutrition" and nuts are no exception. The high variability of nuts can be due to the specific plant, the type, the harvesting area, the exposure to sunlight, the richness of the growing soil, the climatic variability of the seasons and the weather.

When large quantities of nuts are purchased (as it is impossible for all the fruit in the same batch to be the same calibre) one of the parameters that is taken into account at international level is the calibre of the fruit: fruit size is the number of fruit contained in 1 ounce (28.35 g) or 1 pound (454 g) of product. To give a practical example when talking about almonds belonging to category 16/18 what is meant is that in 1 ounce of almonds there are on average between 16 and 18 fruits and this type of classification is also used for cashews, peanuts, Brazil nuts, pecans and pistachios. The same does not apply to hazelnuts, walnuts, macadamia nuts and pumpkin seeds, which are measured by size: for example, when talking about category 13 - 15 hazelnuts what is meant is that in that batch of hazelnuts the diameter of the fruit is around 13 - 15 mm.

Considering the parameters listed above, it is therefore possible to guess that if you want to know the weight of the fruit inside a package, it is either possible to weigh each fruit individually or calculate an average weight.

But how much do nuts weigh?

Here is a summary of the average weights of single fruits available on Nuturally:

25-30g of nuts per day, this is the ideal amount to have a long and, above all, healthy life. By now the whole scientific community agrees that a regular and moderate consumption of nuts, included in a balanced diet and accompanied by a healthy lifestyle, can contribute to maintaining health and reducing the risk of onset of various diseases, without adversely affecting body weight.
This is due above all to the particular composition in fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fibres and complex molecules (phytosterols, tocopherols, phenolic compounds, molecules with anti-inflammatory action, etc.) that make nuts a very important and complete food from a nutritional point of view, suitable as a snack with good satiating power.
In conclusion: it is normal that pieces of nuts of different sizes and weights can be found inside the single packages.
